În cadrul celei de-a 54-a sesiuni a Consiliului ONU pentru Drepturile Omului, Humanists International și Asociația Secular-Umanistă din România (ASUR) au cerut României să protejeze drepturile persoanelor vulnerabile și să se asigure că strategia națională împotriva discursului instigator la ură include mai multe categorii de persoane protejate.
Monica Belițoiu, directoarea executivă a Asociației Secular-Umaniste din România, a transmis declarația prin intervenție video, în numele celor două organizații umaniste, în timpul adoptării raportului de Evaluare Periodică Universală (Universal Periodic Review – UPR) al României*. ”Mr President.
I make this statement on behalf of Humanists International and the Romanian Secular-Humanist Association.
Whilst Romania has made strides in the area of freedom of religion or belief, as the nation becomes increasingly diverse it is crucial to step up action on addressing discrimination and intolerance against religious and non-religious minorities. Accordingly, whilst we were pleased to see the acceptance of a number of provisions on the protection of the rights of vulnerable groups, which included people of different religions and beliefs, we were disappointed by the rejection of a proposal on adopting a comprehensive national strategy to this end.
Along with ensuring FoRB for all, we urge Romania to amend its current national strategy on combating hate speech, to make it all-encompassing and inclusive. It should be widened to include people of all beliefs, ethnicities, genders, and sexual orientations. Whilst tackling hate, the strategy must also ensure recognition of the importance of the fundamental right to free expression, as per the UN’s Rabat Plan of Action.
A nation that recognises the rich tapestry of its inherent diversity and ensures equality for all its citizens is stronger, more harmonious, and just. We remain committed to collaborating with Romania and the international community to foster a society where human rights are universally respected, protected, and upheld.

*Examinarea periodică universală (UPR) este un proces al ONU care implică o examinare periodică a dosarelor privind drepturile omului ale tuturor celor 193 de state membre ale ONU, de către celelalte state. Este un mecanism unic în domeniul drepturilor omului în măsura în care se adresează tuturor țărilor și tuturor drepturilor omului. Grupul de lucru pentru UPR, format din cele 47 de state membre ale Consiliului pentru Drepturile Omului și prezidat de președintele Consiliului pentru Drepturile Omului, efectuează examinările de țară.
